The movie is very inspiring. Lee Reich has also been advocating gardens mulched with wood chips for many years. I had wood chips for mulch in my garden around 15 years ago. The biggest drawback for me was the wood chips provided an excellent environment for slugs. The slug population exploded. Your comment has me thinking about writing about my experience with wood chip mulch. Thank you. P.S. I think you are correct... that if the soil biology is optimum, compost tea is not needed. Same deal but no formulated compost tea needed, just wood chips and time. It was called "Critical Care Course". Designed for nurses to prepare them to work on a professional level in Intensive Care Units. A segment of this resident four month course was called "Critical Review of the Literature". Like my high school typing class, this was an invaluable tool I have used many, many times since then. It taught me the fundamentals of reviewing scientific papers, studies and similar presentations. One of the basic keys was to review the bibliography and the sources for the information presented. One of the crucial points of that was to see who paid for the research. It was then that I learned that land grant schools are almost always funded by some corporation or corporations and so are most of the research and subsequent "papers" they proffer. Therefore their "research" should be suspect. Not all, but most.
And on a related note, I just watched a Smithsonian channel show called Amazing Plants. I have tried, in vain, to find the complete video to refer you to but alas I was not successful. The Smithsonian channel page for Amazing Plants has several videos from the show which are pretty interesting. The BBC also has a similar show which you can watch here:
https://youtu.be/Q-4w5xYLwiU
Called How Plants Communicate and Think.
I started to wonder, after watching the Smithsonian show, what a vegetarian or vegan would think about all this.
But I digress.
Great synopsis of what you've been learning Mr. Kimball. You do a fabulous job of making it fascinating and intriguing.
Best Regards,
PamAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14210768437726876770noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-426937534786021383.post-77847564266454394222017-03-14T20:12:31.656-04:002017-03-14T20:12:31.656-04:00Thank you, I had never heard of her before.

I have been sad to realize lately that all the farmers around me, though nice folks, are really kind of just the Orkin man on tractor.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07619252000101385297noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-426937534786021383.post-35539672088110174572017-03-14T18:31:03.346-04:002017-03-14T18:31:03.346-04:00Well as usual, you have drawn me right in like a f...Well as usual, you have drawn me right in like a fish with a big mouth! I was absolutely fascinated with the short synopsis you posted. To use your statement, "if I were a younger man", I also would be into this with both feet! This idea of hers about wresting control from Big Ag and putting it right back in the hands of the common man is absolutely spot on so the Brits would say.

We have a Farmers market here in the summer. It is just on two days per week, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Over the last few years there has been a proliferation of vendors showing up to offer their produce and homemake items for sale. And there are hundreds of summer renters who come to those days in herds! It is as if anything grown here on the Island is of immense value. The market hours are from 0800 till noon and by 0930, all the veggies are GONE! Last summer I sold about 50-60 lbs of hot peppers alone. They lasted about 20-30minutes.

I am so happy to see more and more people getting back into the business of feeding themselves and their families off the land they live on. I will be promoting the Mini-beds on Plastic this summer to all the folks who grow things out here. Will also steer them to the best site I know of to learn about gardening and very useful ideas. If any of them decide to take up this type of gardening, I'll be sure to take pictures and pass them on.

Thanks again for the great post. I am now on my way to read the links! PS. Got all rain and darn little slushy snow. It is all gone here at dark today.. Best to you, Everett
.ELittlehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14614884616908281632noreply@blogger.com
